On one day, we were able to go to a beach and relax. It was about two hours away from Port au Prince, so it was quite a drive. The way down, we stopped in Titanyen for church at Grace Village, so it was only an hour drive to the beach. The way back, we drove the whole way with no (planned) stops. We stayed at the beach until around 3:30 and then started back to the house. We wanted to be back before dark.

About twenty minutes after leaving the beach, there was a strange noise. We banged on the metal cage and the driver stopped to check out the noise. We had lost both tires on one side. We had no choice but to pull over. Luckily it was a safe area, so we were able to just kind of mull around until the tap-tap was ready to go. Continue reading →

On two mornings, our group went into Cite Soleil to deliver fresh water. Cite Soleil is considered one of the more dangerous places in the world. People don’t go there. At one point, we told someone we went there and they asked if we were joking. If you don’t live in Cite Soleil, you just don’t go there. It has a terrible gang problem and there are shootings, muggings, fights, and everything else you could imagine. So like I said, we went in twice.

Healing Haiti is the only group that delivers free water into Cite Soleil. We filled up a huge milk truck at the water fill station and headed in. We would regularly be at the fill station for over an hour waiting for our truck’s turn at the water.

The first district we visited (Cite Soleil is divided into around 34 different districts) was 17. 17 is going to be the site of a church that Healing Haiti is currently building. Before we walked to see the build site, we delivered the water.

Haiti 2.0: Cite Soleil

Today, plans were constantly changing. We were originally going to Cite Soleil, but then we were told it was too dangerous to go. It’s one of the most dangerous places in the world. We ended up getting the okay to go there though, so that’s where we headed. First we went to district 17, which reminds me of the Hunger Games. That’s where Healing Haiti is building a church. It’s going up on top of 16 feet of trash.

At the church

Three times in different Cite Soleil locations, we delivered water. Healing Haiti runs the only free water delivery truck. We mostly held babies. When it’s safer, we’re allowed to carry buckets to peoples’ homes, but not today. At the third location, we had to speedily load into the Tap-Tap because of some danger.

We made it to Haiti!! (Pictures aren’t working. Sorry.)

Our day started at 4:30 this morning. The first flight of the day left at 6:00 am. We caught three flights total today.

We nearly missed our flight to Port au Prince from Miami. We already had only a 45 minute layover plus we were stuck on the tarmac waiting to get off. Then we discovered the flight we were needing to get on was delayed. Yay!!

We joined with two others in our team and boarded to head to Haiti. There are nine of us total (not counting the long-term missionaries.)

Once we landed in Haiti, we met up with our peeps outside of the airport and loaded up in the top-top to head to the guesthouse. We’re the only team this week so we get all the translators!! Two long-term missionaries with Healing Haiti will also be journeying with us this week. Continue reading →
